Redact PDF

Redact PDF permanently removes sensitive text or image areas from a PDF by replacing them with black rectangles that cover the underlying content. Unlike drawing a black shape over text in an editor (which merely hides the text visually while leaving it readable in the file structure), this tool removes the underlying content from the PDF — the redacted areas cannot be recovered by selecting, copying, or inspecting the file. It is the correct tool for preparing documents for subject access requests, FOI responses, legal disclosure, and any situation where information must be provably absent from a distributed file.

Text in embedded images (scanned pages) is stored as pixels, not as selectable text. To redact text in scanned pages, draw the redaction rectangle over the image area manually — text selection is not available on scanned content. Metadata fields (author, creation date, document title) in the PDF properties are not automatically redacted. If document metadata must also be cleared, manually edit the PDF properties after redacting or use a metadata-stripping tool. Hyperlinks whose URL text is redacted will still navigate to the URL if the reader clicks the now-invisible link area. Redact the associated hyperlink action as well if the destination URL itself is sensitive. PDFs generated with 'flatten' applied before redaction are more reliably redactable — flattening removes layers that might obscure what is actually in the document structure.

When you use a typical online PDF tool, your document is uploaded to a company's server, processed there, and returned as a download. During that process, the company technically has access to your file. For sensitive files — payslips, ID documents, client contracts — that is a real privacy consideration.
